PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which Does Your Car Need?

They are not the same thing, and you do not always need both. Here is how to choose.

People often ask us whether they should get paint protection film or a ceramic coating, as if they are two versions of the same thing. They are not. They solve different problems, and the right answer depends on what you are trying to protect against.

What PPF does

Paint protection film is a physical layer. It takes stone chips, road rash and light scratches so your paint does not. It is the only one of the two that actually stops impact damage, which is why it goes on the high-impact areas: the front end, or the whole body on a car you want fully protected.

What ceramic coating does

Ceramic coating is about the finish and the upkeep. It deepens the gloss, repels water so dirt does not stick, and makes washing far easier. It resists fine wash swirls and chemicals, but it will not stop a stone chip.

So which do you need?

If your main worry is chips and scratches, start with PPF. If it is gloss and easy cleaning, a coating. Many owners do both, PPF on the areas that get hit, and a coating over the whole car for shine and protection. On a new car, that combination is the gold standard, and it is exactly what our new car packages are built around.

FAQ

Quick answers

Can I put ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes, and it is a great combination. The film takes the impacts while the coating adds gloss and makes the whole car easier to keep clean.

Do I need both?

Not always. If you only care about chip protection, PPF alone is fine. If you only want gloss and easy washing, a coating alone is fine. Both together gives the most complete protection.
